the homework was to complete the proof for compactness, and throw in proofs that the product of two sequentially compact spaces was also sequentially compact, and the product of two limit point compact spaces was also limit point compact. Two of them were easy enough, but i struggled with the limit point one for at least a couple of days. It took years for me to understand that not being able to prove something false was exactly right. He now doesn't feel hopeless and has a sense of accomplishment. Photomath also received a Netexplo Forum Award for its work in educational technology.
Presumably phones are not allowed during in-class tests, but I haven't actually been in a math class since 1998 (programmable graphing calculators ftw! Right now, the app supports arithmetic expressions (plus sign, division, etc.), fractions and decimals, powers and roots, and simple linear equations. An easy addition problem (230 230 230 230) returned the correct answer.
But the app did nothing with a more advanced problem (pictured above), though perhaps that one did not qualify as a simple linear equation.
I use this on all of my homework and practice notes. Since my son started middle school his math has gotten significantly more difficult than elementary school. All of my students have this app and I am seeing an improvement with their comprehension and understanding of basic and complicated math facts. Since its launch, Photomath has topped App Store & Google Play Store education charts.
This overhelmed him and he felt ashamed because he didn't "get it" right away like he always had. Photomath was able to show him how to get to the correct answer and the light bulb came on. I love math but on occasions, no matter how much you show your students how to do long division they just can't get it. Being trusted by millions is one of our proudest achievements to date.
