Maybe you see little improvement in your skills or achievements when you reflect on the last five or 10 years.

Or perhaps you struggle to see how you'll fulfil your ambitions during the next few years.

One way of solving problems is this five step method: The first stage of the 5 step problem solving model – Define exactly what the problem is.

Be clear and specific as to what exactly the problem is, when it happens, how often, what effect is it, what is the deviation from standard? Think of at least 2 or 3 possible methods that you might use to identify what went wrong.

Many people spend their lives drifting from one job to another, or rushing around trying to get more done while actually accomplishing very little. Rubin (Saint Louis University) wrote about SMART in an article for The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Setting SMART goals means you can clarify your ideas, focus your efforts, use your time and resources productively, and increase your chances of achieving what you want in life. He stated that SMART has come to mean different things to different people, as shown below.Again, the art of being competitive in business is how quickly you can use problem solving strategies as an embedded culture, to find problems at source and eliminate them.An alternative to PDCA, the 5 step approach is a simpler alternative, which may help a team quickly understand and try new ideas to resolve the problem at hand.In addition, this learning environment helps students solve real-world problems by retrieving relevant information on the Internet and by generating appropriate questions automatically. This learning environment is smart from three points of view.First, the problems to be solved by students are real-world problems.Second, the learning environment extracts relevant information available on the Internet to support problem solving.Third, the environment generates questions which help students to think about the problem to be solved.Do you ever feel like you're working hard but not getting anywhere? If your best strategy doesn’t work, go back to your list of possible strategies in Step Two and choose another.Keep passing through the steps until your measurements tell you the problem has gone.
